Spill Control Basics

Spill Control Basics

Spill control is one of the more complex aspects of our product offerings as it relates to regulations. The following information will give you a very general view of the kinds of regulations in place by the EPA and OSHA. If spills of hazardous materials are a risk for your work space, this will be a great jumping off point. We would encourage you to read all relevant regulations and standards in their entirety as well.

The EPA sets requirements for action regarding spills of hazardous waste, detailed within 40 CFR 263.30, 40 CFR 263.31, and 49 CFR 173.3. These regulations specify the expectation for immediate action in the event of a dangerous spill during transport and the means by which those spills can be contained. In addition to these regulations, OSHA also specifies the requirements for training and planning around spill response as well as  the expectation of equipment present for clean ups.

In addition to these regulations, we get into more requirements  with oil, hazmat, and other specific hazardous materials (such as mercury). Because of this complexity, we often recommend spill kits wherever possible. Spilltech, our long-time spill solution vendor, designs and packs kits with the “HYC” (Help You Comply) model. Regulations and standards are already considered in these kits to help you make sure you are doing everything you need to do to ensure proper response in the case of a spill.

Each plan for spills will be unique to the materials and context, but the needed products are available to you. As you continue your education on these issues, feel free to give us a call at 919-602-2503 or marketing@safetypackonline.com with any questions!
