Signage: Choosing Your Size

Signage: Choosing Your Size

After deciding on your message, the next step in sign selection is choosing a size. No matter how thoughtful your message, the sign will be useless if no one is able to read it clearly. Picking size comes down to making sure that your sign is both visible and legible in the environment. For the purposes of this overview, we are not going to focus on traffic safety signs, but instead on ANSI Z535.2 which outlines the sizing and layout for our other signage.

To discern what size is appropriate for your setting, you first need to be clear about whether conditions are “favorable” or “unfavorable.” Specifically, we want to consider what the lighting will be. Are you hanging your sign indoors? Will your outdoor posting be well lit? From how far away will the reader be viewing the sign?

Under favorable conditions, the general rule is 1 inch of text for every 25 feet of viewing distance. So, in a well lit setting where you can expect the reader to be 80 feet away, the minimum letter height will be 3.2 inches and the sign would need to be 24 x 36. However, in unfavorable conditions, this would grow to a minimum letter height of 6.7 inches and a sign size of 48 x 48. You can look more into the specifics of sizing here if you are interested!

This is just one example, but gives you a good idea of how signs are designed in order to meet guidelines. Fortunately, you are not responsible for designing your sign to meet all regulations. You only need to know the conditions under which the sign will be viewed and from how far away. Based on this information, Safehouse Signs ensures that signage meets the appropriate guidelines for your environment, even if the sign is custom.
