Intrinsically Safe Lights

Intrinsically Safe Lights

When searching our selection of flashlights, you will come across a category titled “Intrinsically Safe.” At surface level, this sounds like a great option for everyone, but today we will take a closer look at what this classification actually means.

For starters it is good to know that this is not a classification regulated by OSHA or ANSI, as is common with many of our products. Instead, these lights are validated by ATEX/IECEx/UL/CSA.

Our light vendor, Nightstick, gives us some great insight into why we have this style of light. They share that intrinsically safe lights are “designed to eliminate risks from heat, sparks, and electrical discharge” and are “essential in explosive environments such as refineries, chemical plants, and fuel storage areas.” It is important to note that many standard rugged or waterproof flashlights do not meet the requirements of intrinsically safe lighting.

For a light to be considered intrinsically safe, there are three expectations. First, there is “controlled energy output” which requires that electrical and thermal energy be limited to prevent sparks or heat from igniting anything surrounding it. Second, these lights must include certified parts. Specifically, these critical parts include the battery, circuitry, and switches which are all independently tested and verified. Finally, intrinsically safe lights require “fault-condition protection” which keeps the light operating safely in instances of short circuits or other failures.

Depending on your working environment, intrinsically safe lights may or may not be on your radar. However, if you work in a setting where risks of ignition are present, this category of light is essential. While that does mean your options are a bit more limited, it does not mean that you have no options at all. Between handheld flashlights, headlamps, and area lights, the available intrinsically safe light options are broad and more than sufficient to meet the needs of your environment.

As with all areas of safety, we are here to help you discern the best options for your workplace. Give us a call at 919-602-2503 or reach out to marketing@safetypackonline.com with any questions, we are happy to help!
