How Do I Make Sure My Harness Fits Correctly?

How Do I Make Sure My Harness Fits Correctly?

The effective use of harnesses in fall protection requires that the correct size is selected and that the wearer knows how to correctly put it on each time they need it. The proper sizing component can be determined using manufacturer-provided sizing charts, but proper donning comes down to clear and effective training.

As we have covered previously, step 1 to donning a harness is always inspection. Once you have ensured your harness is safe to use, your next step is to put the harness on over your shoulders and pull the leg straps around your legs to connect. Then, you will need to ensure that you have adjusted the shoulder straps to fit properly and that seat straps are attached.

After this initial arrangement of the harness, you will shift focus to your chest strap, fastening it and ensuring it is snug but comfortable. It is important to note that the chest strap should sit lower than some often think. This ensures that it does not hit the wearers neck in the case of a fall.

Finally, you will adjust all buckles so that the harness fits snugly and verify that upon tightening you maintain full range of motion. Any excess straps should be secured at this time.

While this process is simple, it is essential for ensuring that the harness works as intended to save a life and/or prevent injury in the case of a fall.
