How Do I Inspect a Harness?

How Do I Inspect a Harness?

Harnesses are a major component of many fall protection systems, providing the connection points for a worker to safely be attached to a fall arrest system. However, wear and tear on harnesses can be extremely dangerous. So, OSHA requires that harnesses are regularly inspected.

There are three major times when harnesses must be inspected. To start off, you must inspect any new harness before its first use. Then, you must inspect it again at the start of each working shift. Thirdly, each harness must be inspected annually by a competent person. This annual inspection is required to be documented for proof it was completed by ANSI/ASSP Z359. This requirement should also be reflected in manufacturer supplied product information.

Competent Person: a person who is capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards in any personal fall protection system or any component of it, as well as in their application and uses with related equipment, and who has authorization to take prompt, corrective action to eliminate the identified hazards (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.140(a))

When inspecting a harness, there are many things to check for. We will cover a few quickly here, but we recommend reviewing the “Harness Inspection Guide” provided by Safewaze for more in depth information. The first area of review is the webbing. You want to be sure there are no fraying areas, cuts, burns, or soiled areas. Beyond this, you will need to ensure that labels have not gone missing, that there is no rusting, distortion, modification, or other concerns for hardware, and that stitching is intact. Again, this is just a quick review of the big picture to get you started. For a full checklist, visit the Harness Inspection Guide linked above.

Harness inspections cannot be skipped or forgotten. They are not just an optional task to help ensure the product you paid for is in good shape. They are a required safety measure to ensure that the worker goes home safe each and every day. If you have questions about how to refresh your harness inspection process, we are here to help.
