First Aid: Digging Deeper

First Aid: Digging Deeper

First Aid is a large part of safety plans across industries. It is one of the safety categories we know is present in a variety of workplaces, even outside of our standard client base.  Regardless of what kinds of risks we may face at work, there is an expectation for there to be accessible first aid supplies in all settings from offices to construction sites to production floors.

So, how do we begin to tease out the details of what you need in your unique setting? We start at the source, ANSI. (Not OSHA? Read why here.) If you have read our previous blog called “First Aid: The Basics,” you know that first aid kits are categorized by both CLASS and TYPE. Class defines what will be in the kit, and type indicates the setting in which the kit is meant to be used.

ANSI goes on to tell us that when we see kits labeled as ANSI, ANSI Compliant, or other labels of that nature, what is actually being stated is that the kit is compliant with the ANSI/ISEA Z301.1-2021 Standard for the minimum requirements for Workplace First Aid Kits and Supplies. This standard was developed by an ANSI-accredited standards developing organization called the International Safety Equipment Association (ISEA).

OSHA does not specify item counts for first aid kits in most contexts, except for logging. As such, adoption of ANSI/ISEA standards for first aid kit requirements is voluntary and based on adequate review of the needs of each specific workplace. The most recent standard is the 2021 update. However, being that these are not mandatory rules, you will find  across states and workplaces that the adopted standards vary and that your state may be sticking to the old standard at this time.

The most important thing to take from this is the importance of understanding the risks present in your work setting to ensure the selection of the most appropriate kit. We are able to talk these out with you and go over the various options available to you at 919-602-2503 or marketing@safetypackonline.com
