Signage Basics

Signage Basics

Signage is a part of many of OSHA’s standards for general industry, maritime, construction, and other industries. This is one category of safety purchases that applies to every workplace with whom we consult. The need for signage ranges from floor signs warning of slippery conditions to danger signs reminding workers of forklift traffic areas to PPE requirement diagrams and everything in between.

On our webpage alone, we have over 1,000 signs available, which means there are A LOT of options for you. But this also is a great illustration of how wide the range of needs is for signage. Our sign vendor, Safehouse Signs, gives us a great guide to walk through the selection process with 4 simple steps.

1. Message

Understanding your message is as simple (or complicated) as deciding what you need to say. Are you warning workers of hazards? Is there a confined space danger? Do you need to post notices keeping the general public out of your job site? The list is seemingly endless!

Regardless of what the message is, it is best to keep it short and sweet. You may find an existing sign that fits your exact needs which means you can move on to the next step. But, you may also find that the signage you need is unique to your environment or that you want to include branding. In that case, a custom sign is the way to go.

The next 3 decisions have the biggest impact on pricing for stock signs, while a custom sign will have additional cost in the process of development.

2. Size

The size of the sign will be based on how much you want to say and from how far away it needs to be visible/legible. You can find Safehouse Signs’ guide to size here along with some more detail about each of these sections.

3. Material

Material choice is going to be based on the sign’s environment, the permanence of the sign, regulatory requirements, and budget. Depending on where you fall on each of these, you may also have some amount of preference impacting your decision.

4. Placement

Placement comes into play when considering how the sign will be mounted and what features may need to be present. For example, a sign being permanently attached may require holes to be added, while a temporary sign may utilize something like double sided tape.

The big picture here is that signage is both essential and very specific to the environment in which it will be used. Whether we are working together to design the perfect custom sign or selecting from a stock option, the right signage is available.
