New Expectations for Women's PPE

New Expectations for Women's PPE

In recent years, women have become an increasingly larger portion of the workforce in many industries, including construction. Nationwide, there are more than 1 million women working in construction, a number that continues to grow (Construction Coverage, 2025). But what does this mean for their safety?

OSHA Standard for General Industry 1910.132(d)(1)(iii) established the standard that PPE must fit the wearer properly. And, as of January 2025, this rule has been included in the OSHA Standard for Safety and Health Regulations for Construction 1926.95 (c)(2), as well. What this means for safety professionals in the construction industry is that all PPE, such as hi-vis vesting, must be provided in options that fit both the male and female body.

The philosophy of a “one size fits all” solution for PPE is no longer a best practice in the workplace. If PPE does not fit the person properly, they are more likely to wear it incorrectly, or not at all, creating additional hazards. For example, improperly sized eye protection may result in dust and debris getting behind the lens causing injury to the eye, and improperly sized hi-vis apparel may result in snagging and grabbing hazards if it is loose and hanging off the wearer.

What does this mean for PPE purchasing?

As more companies are seeking to purchase women’s PPE, we will experience a shift in the market. The intention behind providing PPE designed for women is to provide the same level of protection without creating unnecessary perceptions of difference or imbalance. As such, we anticipate that the number of products currently offered for both men and women will increase over the coming years as this new rule permeates throughout the construction industry.

With the complexity of construction job sites, it is imperative that crews can be spotted quickly and easily. This emphasizes the need for safety apparel options that are the same visual design when worn. Employers will need options for women's safety apparel that are the same design and price point as the choices for their male counterparts ensuring there are no added visual differences. While there are some manufacturers offering this option now, we expect to see that variety continue to grow.

Safety & Packaging Sales is committed to offering a wide range of PPE for women and continue to source more options as they come onto the market. Currently, this includes, but is not limited to, Hi-Vis Apparel, Eye and Face Protection, Hand Protection, Foot Protection, FR and Welding Apparel, and other apparel.
