Head Protection: Type II Helmets

Head Protection: Type II Helmets

Hard hats are not a “one-size-fits-all” product, they must be selected with consideration for the specific hazards your employees face. OSHA Standard for Construction 1926.100 states: “Employees working in areas where there is a possible danger of head injury from impact, or from falling or flying objects, or from electrical shock and burns, shall be protected by protective helmets.” A similar rule is set for General Industry in standards 1910.135(a)(1) and 1910.135(a)(2). As noted in these standards, potential hazards to the head include a wide range of risks, which is why we see a wide range of options on the market. In the next few paragraphs, we will take a look at Type II helmets, who should be using them, and what options are available to you.

What qualifies as a Type II helmet?

Type II helmets are designed to protect against lateral blows and impacts, plus impacts to the top of the head. In contrast, Type I helmets offer protection solely against blows coming from above.

What styles are available?

There are Type II helmets on the market in cap style, full brim, and climbing style as well as helmets meeting each class requirement. (Check out our Head Protection Basics for more information on classes).

What industries and settings call for Type II helmets?

We are seeing Type II helmets becoming a bigger presence across industries, but especially within commercial construction. 2024 OSHA Safety & Health Information Bulletin, Head Protection: Safety Helmets in the Workplace, provides a lot of guidance and context for the use and selection of various head protection options. Some settings where Type II helmets are appropriate include:

  • Construction
  • Oil and gas
  • Industrial settings requiring the wearer to be in awkward working positions
  • Areas with a lot of moving people and materials
  • Any setting where there is a heightened risk of head injuries

As with all PPE, ultimately the need comes down to the unique context of your working environment. Even if you have been in Type I helmets in the past, it is worthwhile to consider whether Type II helmets are the right choice for your crew. In step with growing demand, there are a growing number of options entering the market to ensure that style and class options match the needs of each workplace.
