Ergonomics

Ergonomics

According to Merriam-Webster, ergonomics is “an applied science concerned with designing and arranging things people use so that the people and things interact most efficiently and safely.” In OSHA’s more simplified words, ergonomics is “fitting a job to a person.”

Ergonomics in the workplace is concerned with the prevention of Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) resulting from  a variety of work tasks like repetitive movements or lifting heavy items. Not only is the risk of MSDs present in a wide range of workplaces, work-related MSDs are some of the most frequently reported causes of lost work time.

So, what does this mean for you? Ergonomic items are not always the first on the list for PPE purchases, and because of the often slower build-up of injury due to these kinds of hazards, sometimes they can go unnoticed. Some examples of these items include knee pads, back supports, ergonomically designed floor mats, and kneeling pads.

The key to protecting against MSDs to the best of your ability is to consider risks present in a workplace setting before major issues arise so you can anticipate and provide products that will reduce those issues. In addition to engineering out as much risk as possible, proper training of employees is essential! It is important to encourage early reporting of symptoms to allow for the quickest response, in hopes of addressing hazards before MSDs develop. Some aspects of a job may be more obvious (such as roles requiring a lot of kneeling, resulting in a need for knee padding). In other cases, issues may arise that are unexpected. When these hazards make themselves known, you should be ready to respond quickly.

Protecting against MSDs is not a “one and done” aspect of your safety plan. Proper evaluation and reevaluation of your systems is necessary over time as some solutions may become less effective. There could also be new solutions that become available to you.

Ergonomics is not always at the top of mind when it comes to safety plans, but the goal of all safety professionals is to (figuratively) prevent a fire rather than waiting for a fire to occur. You may be able to put it out, but there will always be less damage if you are in prevention mode.

This is a unique category of safety in that it is extremely specific to your individual workplace and workers. We are available to talk through what you think you may need in your setting and how we can help you meet those ergonomic needs.  Give us a call at 919-602-2503 or reach out to marketing@safetypackonline.com with any questions you have!
